Homeopathic remedies

Homeopathic remedies are made from …

What are homeopathic remedies made from?

What are homeopathic remedies made from? – is one of the most common question from my patients.

According to the U.S. FDA-recognised Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, homeopathic remedies are made from natural sources, whether vegetable, mineral, or animal. THey are usually identified by Latin names, because these are international, and have the name of the original substance it was made from. For example: Allium cepa – red onion, Apis mellifica – made from a honeybee, Natrum muriaticum – sodium chloride or common salt.

Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and safe. There are now over 4000 registered homeopathic remedies, and more than 60% of them are made from plants: flowers, bark, roots, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds. Remedies that have mineral origin are prepared from salts, metals, or inert substances from the chemical point of view, which can not react normally with the human body and are eliminated as they were ingested, for example sand (silicon dioxide – Silica). The preparations of animal remedies can be based even on toxic substances, such as snake or spider venom. However, due to extremely low doses, they do not pose any threat to the body.

The most plant remedies and easily soluble substances are initially diluted with alcohol (ethanol). Less soluble substances, such as minerals, are grinded with lactose (mil sugar), that reduces particle size and they become soluble or colloidal. This preparation is named trituration, after that continues with dilution in alcohol. A substance in an alcohol fluid base is named the mother tincture and it gives birth to the daughter homeopathic potencies. The sucrose or lactose pills serve like a carrier of information. The most common available form of remedies are: tablets – based on sucrose and lactose and dissolve rather slowly, pillules – based on sucrose (plant sugar) and dissolve quicker, granules – tiny round grains based on sucrose, liquid remedies, powders, cream and ointments – easily absorbed. For those who have lactose intolerance most suitable forms are pillules, granules and liquid remedies. However, even with other forms, amounts of lactose are tiny and this may not be a problem.

Homeopathic remedies are FDA regulated and safe to use for everyone in the hands of the lay person. They are given in such small doses that they don’t cause side effects and can be used during pregnancy and by nursing women, infants, children, and adults. Remedies have none of the side effects that many allopathic medications have, because they are made from natural sources and are environmentally friendly and harmless. Homeopathic remedies are very affordable and most of them are available over the counter in grocery stores, drug stores, health food stores, homeopathic pharmacies, and online.
